Apple App Store overcharge.

What this claim is about

Apple takes a commission — up to 30% — on apps, subscriptions and in-app purchases of digital content bought through its App Store, the only way to put apps on an iPhone or iPad. The claim, brought by Dr Rachael Kent on behalf of UK users, argued that Apple used its dominant position to shut out competition and charge an unfair, excessive commission that was passed on to customers in higher prices.

In October 2025 the Competition Appeal Tribunal agreed. It ruled unanimously that Apple had abused its dominant position, and found that around £1.5 billion is owed to UK iPhone and iPad users. Apple is challenging the decision, so it isn’t final and no money is being paid out yet.

This is an opt-out collective claim: eligible UK users are included automatically, and the deadline to opt out passed in 2022. There is nothing to sign and nothing to pay — you don’t need a claims company, and LegalClaimPro doesn’t collect your details here. If the ruling stands, the official claim will explain how eligible people receive their share. Nothing here is legal or financial advice.

In plain English

How this kind of claim works

Group claims take different forms. Here’s the shape of this one, in plain terms.

Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT)
A specialist court that hears large consumer claims about companies breaking competition law.
Abuse of a dominant position
Using market power unfairly — here, that Apple’s grip on the App Store let it charge an unfair commission.
Opt-out claim
If you’re eligible you’re included automatically — you don’t sign up and you pay nothing. Registering on the official site just keeps you informed.
Subject to appeal
The Tribunal found against Apple, but Apple is challenging the decision, so nothing is final and no money is being paid yet.

Who’s covered?

  • You bought an app, or made an in-app purchase — digital content, a subscription or an extra feature — on the App Store using an iPhone or iPad, between 1 October 2015 and 15 November 2024
  • You were in the UK when you made those purchases
  • It’s an opt-out claim, so eligible people are included automatically — nothing to sign, nothing to pay (apps for physical goods or services, like Uber or Deliveroo, don’t count)

How it’s unfolded

  • May 2021 Dr Rachael Kent files the claim at the Competition Appeal Tribunal.
  • 2022 The Tribunal lets the claim proceed; the deadline to opt out passes in September.
  • Jan–Mar 2025 The claim is heard at trial.
  • October 2025 The Tribunal rules unanimously that Apple abused its dominant position, and finds around £1.5bn is owed to UK users.
  • Now Apple is appealing. If the ruling stands, the official claim will set out how eligible people are paid.

Common questions

Do I need to sign up?

No. It’s an opt-out claim, so eligible UK users are included automatically, and the opt-out deadline passed in 2022. You can follow the official site for updates.

Will I definitely get money?

No — nothing is final. Apple is appealing, and any payout, and how much, would be decided later. Be wary of anyone promising you a fixed sum.

Does it cost anything?

No. There’s nothing to pay and no fee taken from you — this isn’t a “no win, no fee” sign-up. Any compensation would come from Apple.

How do I know if I bought anything?

You can check your App Store purchase history in your Apple account. Apps for physical goods or services — like Uber or Deliveroo — aren’t included.
